If there's one thing people are quick to talk about, it's a car's acceleration. Many people know various car's 0-60 or even 1/4-mile) times. But acceleration is way more complicated than that. 0-60 mph time are appropriate topics at drag strips, but in the real world it can be secondary to the car's reaction to pedal depression when the light goes green. Or how long it takes for a engine's start/stop system to react when you lift off the brake pedal. Or how well it can pass a slow car on a two-lane road. In particular, the instant-torque of EV's has completely changed how we think about acceleration.

As with acceleration, we've tended to talk about braking in terms of a single number, in this case, emergency stopping distances. That's obviously important in those rare emergency stopping situations. But (hopefully) lots more times, in fact many times per day, we experience a brake pedal's response to time to pressing it. Or non-linearity, which can make judging a normal stopping distance slightly unpredictable. Today's electrified powertrains often involve a braking system' switchover from regenerative braking to traditional friction-braking. And often it's unpleasant.

Handling is a lot more than just steering a car. Steering is about re-aiming where a car is going. Handling is how it does that, and your feeling about how it does that, as you turn the wheel. While there are both great and terrible handling cars, actually we - as drivers - are all over the map about what we consider great handling. For some, it's go-kart reactions. Others, its relaxed detachment. Here we'll where each car lands in this handling landscape.
13. Interior Noise
Interior noise isn't just about a car's dBA level at 70 mph; it's a much more complex thing than that. For instance, there are interior noise frequencies that especially garble conversations. Others can specifically erode your music-listening experience. A minority of car buyers actually want louder interior noise (if the car's an exotic) or near silence if it's an EV. Here we'll 'hear' what experts think of a car's interior noise and what measures its manufacturer has taken to improve it.

As with interior noise (see above) ride quality isn't just a number on a 1 to 10 scale. Our feeling about it is shaded by what we expect (both a Ferrari's and a Rolls-Royce's ride can be called great, based on what we expect). This is a subject that's really only come in focus in the last few years, yet suddenly it's become a major topic when choosing a car. The most common Driver Assist Systems include blind-spot monitoring and back-up cross-traffic alert, but most notably, automatic lane centering and adaptive cruise control (together known as ADAS). While old-time cruise control was marginally helpful during long-distance travels, ADAS can let you relax while your car handles tense stop-and-go commuting. Or make mistakes and scare you. Beyond that is genuine autonomous driving systems with either hands on the wheel or eyes on the road. What works? What doesn't?
16. Mileage
The average car gets 28 mpg. But as we all know, nothing is average. The mileage we expect from a 3-row SUV isn't the same as a streamlined EV sedan. So we might better ask: how fuel efficient is it compared to its rivals? Additionally, its cost per mile is greatly affected by whether the car requires regular-grade or premium gas, and the high-efficiency of EVs changes everything (for them, we're using the EV mileage convention 'mpge' - miles per gallon electric, which is considers an EVs electrical energy use as if that energy was gasoline; an imperfect but outwardly simple trick).
17. Safety
Safety is one of the highest interest topics for car buyers, and crash test results by both the NHTSA and IIHS provide some great answers. However, beyond our tradition definition of safety are recent features like stability control (which reduces crash incidents and particularly, roll-over events), rear-view back-up cameras (that enhances safety for pedestrians - specifically children), blind spot alerts, and tired/grogginess alerts.

Here we'll discuss not only the car's pricing, but what events are taking place that might influence it. Is it nearing the end of its model cycle and perhaps going to see discounts? Are gas prices climbing which often raises the price of high-mpg hybrids of plug-in hybrids?

If you're not under pressure to simply find the cheapest priced car - while putting aside everything that might follow - then overall value might be more important than initial price. Depreciation is a huge factor here, making what initially seemed like a good deal into a bad deal three years later. More recently, new tech capabilities like over-the-air-updates can mean periodically refreshed software in your car (even new features) which adds to a car's value as it ages.
20. Reliability
Another high-interest topic for more car buyers is reliability. In general, modern cars are way more reliable than those of the past, but even so, there remains a real gap between brands with a reputation for reliability (and longevity) and those with out it. However, as with all generalizations, there are exceptions and even brands with proven drivetrains can still suffer from glitchy electrical gremlins or squeaks and rattles.
